Payroll tax in Victoria: what growing businesses should know
Victoria’s payroll tax rate is 4.85% on taxable wages above the $1 million annual threshold (about $83,333 a month). Regional Victorian employers pay a reduced rate of 1.2125%. Since 1 July 2024, employers and groups with Australian taxable wages between $3 million and $5 million get a reduced deduction that phases out.
Once wages pass the threshold you register with State Revenue Office Victoria; the annual reconciliation is due by 21 July.
Running a business in Victoria: the state obligations
Beyond the ATO, Melbourne employers deal with state rules: workers compensation insurance through WorkSafe Victoria, payroll tax with State Revenue Office Victoria once wages pass the threshold and, in building and construction, portable long service leave through LeavePlus (formerly CoINVEST). Free help for small businesses is available from Business Victoria and the Victorian Small Business Commission. We help you register, budget for each one and keep the paperwork straight.
Who we work with in Melbourne
Victoria’s economy is broad: health care and social assistance, construction, professional and financial services, education, manufacturing, retail and hospitality, with agriculture (dairy, grains and horticulture) across the regions.
Construction is one of Victoria’s biggest employers. If your business is mainly building and construction and pays contractors, you probably need to lodge a taxable payments annual report (TPAR) with the ATO by 28 August each year. We code contractor payments as they happen so the TPAR builds itself.
