GST rules are different for rideshare drivers

Most businesses only register for GST when turnover reaches $75,000. That threshold doesn’t apply to ride-sourcing. The ATO says you need an ABN and GST registration before your first ride-sourcing trip, regardless of how much you earn. If you already have an ABN but aren’t registered for GST, register within 21 days of starting.

Food and parcel delivery is different: delivery-only drivers generally follow the normal $75,000 GST threshold. If you do both, ask us how to keep the income separate.

What we do for drivers

  • ABN and GST registration
  • Quarterly BAS preparation and lodgement
  • Individual tax returns with your driving income and expenses
  • Car expense method (cents per km or logbook) and record-keeping set-up
  • Catch-up on overdue BAS and ATO letters, payment plans

Deductions and records

Common claims include the work-related share of car running costs, phone and data, platform fees and tolls. For 2025–26 the ATO cents per kilometre rate is 88 cents per kilometre, up to 5,000 business kilometres per car; above that you need a logbook. See our rideshare and delivery driver deductions guide.

BAS due dates

Quarterly BAS is generally due on 28 October, 28 February, 28 April and 28 July. Lodging through a registered agent can give later dates for some quarters (not the December quarter).
