Queensland payroll calendar and obligations
Queensland moves its holidays around compared with the southern states: Labour Day is the first Monday in May, the King’s Birthday is the first Monday in October, and the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) Wednesday holiday applies in the Brisbane area in August. We set public holidays in your payroll software for your state so penalty rates and leave are calculated correctly.
Annual workers compensation wage declarations go to WorkCover Queensland, and building and construction employers report to QLeave for portable long service leave. We prepare the wage figures from your payroll records.
Bookkeeping for Brisbane industries
Queensland’s economy leans on construction, health care, tourism, mining and resources, agriculture (beef, sugar and horticulture), education and logistics.
Tourism, hospitality and construction mean many Queensland businesses run casual and seasonal staff and pay contractors. Building, cleaning, courier and security businesses that pay contractors generally have to lodge a taxable payments annual report (TPAR) by 28 August, so we code those payments as they happen.
Payday Super since 1 July 2026
Super guarantee (12% of qualifying earnings) now has to reach employees’ funds within 7 business days of each payday, reported through STP. We set up pay runs so super goes out with wages.
Payroll tax for Brisbane employers
Queensland payroll tax is 4.75% where Australian taxable wages are $6.5 million or less and 4.95% above that, on wages over the $1.3 million annual threshold. Regional employers may get a 1% rate discount until 30 June 2030, and a mental health levy applies to employers and groups paying more than $10 million in annual Australian taxable wages.
Good bookkeeping keeps an eye on this for you: we track Australia-wide wages (including grouped businesses) so you know before you reach the Queensland threshold. Annual reconciliations with Queensland Revenue Office are due by 21 July.

Brisbane doesn’t use daylight saving: our 9am–5pm (Melbourne time) is 8am–4pm in Brisbane from October to April, and the same time the rest of the year. We’re open 9am–5pm, Monday to Sunday (Melbourne time).
