Victoria payroll calendar and obligations
Victoria has public holidays most states don’t: Melbourne Cup Day (the first Tuesday in November, across Victoria unless a regional council has arranged a local show or cup day instead) and the Friday before the AFL Grand Final. We set public holidays in your payroll software for your state so penalty rates and leave are calculated correctly.
Annual workers compensation wage declarations go to WorkSafe Victoria, and building and construction employers report to LeavePlus (formerly CoINVEST) for portable long service leave. We prepare the wage figures from your payroll records.
Payroll tax for Melbourne employers
Victoria’s payroll tax rate is 4.85% on taxable wages above the $1 million annual threshold (about $83,333 a month). Regional Victorian employers pay a reduced rate of 1.2125%. Since 1 July 2024, employers and groups with Australian taxable wages between $3 million and $5 million get a reduced deduction that phases out.
Good bookkeeping keeps an eye on this for you: we track Australia-wide wages (including grouped businesses) so you know before you reach the Victoria threshold. Annual reconciliations with State Revenue Office Victoria are due by 21 July.
Payday Super since 1 July 2026
Super guarantee (12% of qualifying earnings) now has to reach employees’ funds within 7 business days of each payday, reported through STP. We set up pay runs so super goes out with wages.
Bookkeeping for Melbourne industries
Victoria’s economy is broad: health care and social assistance, construction, professional and financial services, education, manufacturing, retail and hospitality, with agriculture (dairy, grains and horticulture) across the regions.
Construction is one of Victoria’s biggest employers. If your business is mainly building and construction and pays contractors, you probably need to lodge a taxable payments annual report (TPAR) with the ATO by 28 August each year. We code contractor payments as they happen so the TPAR builds itself.
