Does the zone tax offset apply in Brisbane?

Large parts of regional and northern Queensland are in Zone A or Zone B for the zone tax offset; it depends on your usual place of residence, not where you work. The ATO bases eligibility on your usual place of residence for 183 days or more in the income year.

Common Brisbane tax return situations

Brisbane has a lot of tradies on wages. Employees can usually claim tools and equipment used for work: items costing $300 or less can be claimed outright, while dearer tools are depreciated over their effective life. Instant asset write-off is a business concession and doesn’t apply to employees.

Driving between job sites (not home to a regular workplace) can be claimed. For 2025–26 the cents per kilometre rate is 88 cents, up to 5,000 work kilometres per car.

Deductions for common Brisbane occupations

Queensland’s economy leans on construction, health care, tourism, mining and resources, agriculture (beef, sugar and horticulture), education and logistics. Our free occupation guides explain what the ATO allows for many of these jobs:
