Does the zone tax offset apply in Melbourne?
Victoria has no locations in the ATO’s zone tax offset list, so the zone offset doesn’t apply to Victorian residents. The ATO bases eligibility on your usual place of residence for 183 days or more in the income year.
Lodgement dates when you use a tax agent
Self-lodgers must lodge by 31 October. Engage a registered agent before 31 October (and clear any overdue earlier returns by then) to be covered by the agent’s later lodgement program. Agent fees are generally deductible.

Common Melbourne tax return situations
Many Melbourne clients are nurses, teachers and office workers who work from home part of the week. For 2025–26 the ATO’s fixed rate method is 70 cents per hour worked from home, and you need a record of the actual hours (a timesheet, roster or diary) for the whole year, not an estimate.
If your total work-related expenses are $300 or less, you can claim without receipts, but you still need to show how you worked out the amount. Car expenses are not covered by that $300 rule.
