Typical processing times

The ATO says most online returns are processed within about two weeks. If the ATO needs to review something, such as income that doesn’t match its records or a large or unusual deduction, processing can take up to 30 calendar days or longer if they contact you.

How to track your return

Log in to myGov, open ATO online services and check the progress of your tax return. When processing is complete, your notice of assessment appears in your myGov Inbox and any refund is paid to the bank account on your return.

Why your refund might be slower

  • Pre-fill data (such as employer income statements) wasn’t finalised when you lodged
  • Income or deductions that don’t match what the ATO holds
  • A debt with the ATO or another agency that the refund is offset against
  • Bank details missing or wrong
  • The ATO asking for more information

Lodging through a tax agent

Returns lodged by an agent go through the same ATO processing. Agents lodge electronically and can check status for you. Wait until your income statements are marked “tax ready” before lodging, which avoids amendments later. See our tax return service.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a tax refund take?

Most online returns are processed in about two weeks. Some take up to 30 days if the ATO needs to check something.

How do I check my tax refund?

Through ATO online services in myGov. Your notice of assessment appears in your myGov Inbox when processing finishes.

Why is my refund less than expected?

It may have been offset against an ATO or other government debt, or your withholding, income or deductions may differ from what you expected. The notice of assessment shows the calculation.

Is it faster to lodge with a tax agent?

Processing is done by the ATO either way. An agent helps you lodge accurately the first time, which avoids delays.
