Deductions for common Perth occupations
Western Australia’s economy is anchored by mining and resources (iron ore, gold, lithium and LNG), plus construction, agriculture (especially grain), health care and professional services that support the resources sector. Our free occupation guides explain what the ATO allows for many of these jobs:
Lodgement dates when you use a tax agent
Self-lodgers must lodge by 31 October. Engage a registered agent before 31 October (and clear any overdue earlier returns by then) to be covered by the agent’s later lodgement program. Agent fees are generally deductible.
Common Perth tax return situations
Perth is home to many fly-in fly-out workers. The ATO is clear that the zone tax offset depends on your usual place of residence, so a FIFO worker who lives in Perth generally can’t claim it, even if the mine site is in a zone. Travel between home and a work site you fly to under your roster is generally private.
Other claims can still add up: protective clothing and boots, licences and tickets you renew for your current job, and union fees. See our mining and FIFO guide.
Tax returns for Perth, done online
No Perth office visit needed: we are based in Docklands, Melbourne, and you upload documents, sign and get your return lodged electronically. Perth is 3 hours behind Melbourne during daylight saving (October to April) and 2 hours behind the rest of the year, so our 9am–5pm (Melbourne time) is 6am–2pm or 7am–3pm in Perth. Email and file uploads work around the clock.
